The Council of the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda is mandated to supervise and regulate the engagement, training and transfer of pharmacy students and to make provision for the registration of students; and to specify the class of persons who shall have the right to train pharmacy students (section 21; PDA, 1970). As such, PSU directly and through collaborations carries out these roles at the three (3) Universities offering graduate and postgraduate pharmacy training in Uganda, namely;
- Kampala International University (KIU),
- Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) and
- Makerere University (Mak)
The Pharmacy School at Kampala International University (KIU)-Western Campus is a Private University located in Ishaka town - Bushenyi District, and was established 2004. It currently offers the following programs: Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm), Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) in Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology, Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Analysis and Quality Control, and Master of Science in Pharmacology. In addition, the School offers PhDs (by research) in Pharmacy disciplines and Pharmacology. The School has an additional two Masters programs in the pipeline namely; Master of Pharmacy in Clinical Pharmacy and an Integrated Master of Pharmacy. Dr. Mercy Tenywa Gladys (PhD), a clinical pharmacist and a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda, is the current Associate Dean and contact person.
The Department of Pharmacy- Mbarara University of Science and Technology is a Public University located in Mbarara City and was established in 2003. The department offers two undergraduate programs; Bachelor of Pharmacy and Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and various postgraduate programs such as Masters of Pharmacy in Clinical Pharmacy, Master of Science in Pharmacognosy & Natural Medicine Science, Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Analysis and PhD in all relevant pharmacy disciplines. The department also has plans for two additional Masters programs; MSc. Pharmaceutical Business Management and MSc. Veterinary Pharmacy. The current Head of Department is Assoc. Prof. Patrick Ogwang Engeu, a passionate researcher in natural products development and traditional medicines. Prof. Ogwang is the Founder and Managing Director of Jena Herbals Ltd, the producers of Covidex, Jenamal and other healthcare products. He is a former President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda.
The Department of Pharmacy- Makerere University is a Public University is located at Makerere University-Main Campus in Kampala City. It was established in 1988 under the under the auspices of Prof. Richard Odoi Adome (PhD). It currently offers a Bachelor of Pharmacy Degree, MSc. Pharmacognosy, MSc. Pharmaceuticals and Health Supplies Management and PhD in relevant pharmacy disciplines. The department has two Masters programs in the pipeline namely; MSc. Clinical Pharmacy and MSc. Medicines Regulation. The current head of the department is Dr. Robert BD Otto, a former Council Member of PSU and veteran academic pharmacist who specializes in quality assessment of biological and biotechnological products.
